PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Dr. Ghaly has performed hundreds of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy procedures -- the cutting edge treatment that uses your own blood to activate your stem cells. Platelet Rich Plasma is plasma that has been enriched with a high concentration of platelets. These platelets contain growth factors that ignite tissue regeneration, blood vessel formation and collagen production. PRP Therapy has been used since the 1970s in areas such as dentistry, neurosurgery, wound healing, and orthopedics.  Recent technologic advances have enabled PRP Therapy to move from the hospital setting into the physician’s office. In the world of high-stakes sports, numerous professional athletes have benefitted from PRP Therapy -- including Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant. Dr. Ghaly is one of a select few physicians in the United States experienced in and qualified to offer PRP Therapy.

PRP Facial Rejuvenation

PRP Facial Rejuvenation Therapy is a treatment that uses the patient’s own blood to activate the stem cells that lie dormant in the face.  Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is plasma that has been enriched with a high concentration of platelets.  Platelets contain growth factors that ignite tissue regeneration, blood vessel formation and collagen production.

What are the effects of PRP Facial Rejuvenation Therapy?

This revolutionary natural procedure offers gradual but noticeable improvement in skin texture, tone, and color with minimal or no recovery time.

• Skin color appears "younger" due to new blood vessel formation.

• New collagen formations in the dermis “lift” the face back to a more youthful shape.

• Because the growth factors build skin volume, wrinkles diminish and skin appears smoother.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Take Arnica and Ester-C one week prior to treatment.  (These are available over-the-counter or, if you prefer, our office can ship them directly to you prior to your appointment).  Do not take Advil or bloodthinning pain meds a few days before treatment.  Arrive to treatment with a clean, make-up free face -- or bring your own makeup remover.  Bring sunglasses and a hat or scarf with you to protect your freshly treated skin from the elements. Also, keep in mind you'll leave the plasma on your face overnight, as it is 'feeding' your skin!

What happens during the PRP Facial Rejuvenation Treatment?

 • Dr. Ghaly will assess the degree of skin aging, perform a simple skin analysis, and recommend a sensible treatment with a reasonable outcome.

• Blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge to separate the PRP and activate the growth factors. • While the blood is processing (for approximately 15 minutes) your skin is cleansed, a local anesthetic cream is applied, and nerve blocks may also be given.

• Dr. Ghaly rolls a medical instrument called a Derma Roller over the skin as he administers your Platelet Rich Plasma. The Derma Roller creates micro punctures that penetrate the outer layer of the skin. This not only ensures the plasma will be effectively absorbed into the skin, but it also prompts the skin cells to release a variety of growth factors.

• PRP is carefully injected into specific target areas, such as around the eyes and smile lines.

• The plasma is then carefully patted into the face where you will allow it to remain overnight.

How long is the recovery time?

Typically, there is little to no downtime associated with the treatment, but it depends on your unique skin type, history and lifestyle, as well as the extent of the treatment administered. Some people experience mild swelling for just a couple of days. If minor bruising occurs, downtime can be approximately one week.  Physical activity and sun exposure should be limited for a few days following treatment.  Continue taking Arnica and Ester-C for one week after treatment.  Avoid Ibuprophen and Aspirin for few days after treatment.  If you prefer to take a pain medication, Acetaminophen (ie:Tylenol) is recommended.

How long does the treatment take?

The process takes between 45-90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the area treated.

How many treatments are needed?

Dr. Ghaly will assess the degree of skin aging and perform a simple skin analysis to determine a recommended number of treatments.  Most people require two to three treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

How long do the results last?

Results vary depending on each individual’s skin type and history, but typically last 1-2 years.

Is PRP Skin Rejuvenation Therapy similar to a surgical face lift?

PRP Skin Rejuvenation Therapy is not a surgical face lift.  Unlike a surgical procedure, the effect is gradual and natural, and there is little to no downtime.   Improvement of skin texture and tone can be noticeable within a few weeks and improvement continues for the next several months as more collagen and keratin is generated under the skin.

Do other areas of the body benefit from PRP therapy?

PRP Therapy recently stepped into the spotlight when it was reported that Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu received the treatment to speed the recovery of an injured knee ligament. Tiger Woods underwent PRP therapy to aid in healing his torn Achilles' tendon and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Takashi Saito received PRP therapy as well.   Dr. Ghaly has achieved significant results in common injuries/conditions such as arthritic joints, muscle sprains and tears, tennis and golfers’ elbow, Achilles tendonitis, torn ligaments, rotator cuff tears and meniscus injuries.

Is PRP Therapy safe?

Dr. Ghaly is one of a select few physicians in the United States experienced in and qualified to offer PRP Therapy.  Thousands of research articles have been published on the safety and efficacy of PRP Therapy.  Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of an allergic reaction.   In addition, PRP contains a concentrated amount of white blood cells, your natural defenders against infections.  As a result, infection is extremely rare.

How much does PRP Therapy cost?

PRP Facial Rejuvenation Therapy treatment costs vary depending on the number of areas treated. (Patients who receive PRP Facial Rejuvenation often opt to include the face, neck, chest and hands). PRP Joint Injection Therapy treatment costs vary depending on the complexity of the area (knees, shoulder, Achilles tendon, etc.). Treatment packages are available at discounted rates as Dr. Ghaly generally recommends two to three treatments, 4-6 weeks apart.
